We had some confusion last week during the Uncrate procedures at our regional and want to make sure every one understands the procedure for upcoming events or for next year.
Uncrate is always at 7:45 a.m. SHARP on Thursday mornings. 3 team members are allowed to enter the pit with only hand tools that are needed to open your crate and safety glasses. All 3 team members must enter together and if they leave the pit for any reason, they cannot re-enter until pits officially open to all. (NO in or out priviledges).
The uncrate team must check in before entering the pits. This is for 2 reasons:
- To inspect what you are carrying in
- To acknowledge that you are in the arena uncrating
Once you have your robot uncrated – do this as quickly and safely as possible – notify the drayage crew in the pits ASAP and they will come remove your empty crate. The faster we uncrate and store, the faster we can open the pits.
This past Thursday, we had a 30 minute delay in our pit opening because we had 3 local Portland teams late getting to the arena to uncrate. We also had a big miscommunication by our volunteer staff and the pits opened before the crates were safely removed. Many parent/students who were forced to stand and wait for over an hour and a half had some well justified complaints and I ask that you communicate our procedure to them so that they fully understand the process.
FIRST cannot open the pits until all crates are removed to a storage location. Many pits use forklifts and/or handtrucks to move the empty crates and it is too dangerous and crowded to do this task with over 1,000 people in the pit area. You can communicate to your team that the uncrate team only need arrive at 7:30 a.m. and the rest of the team can arrive around 8:20 as we cannot always guarantee inside waiting areas during the uncrating period. Other issues that arose was the need for restrooms and again, we cannot allow access to the arena until pits officially open and arena security forces are in place.
If you are going to a second play in Seattle, Sacramento, Las Vegas or Atlanta, please make me proud of my teams and follow the procedures above. Also BE ON TIME at 7:45 a.m. and be prepared with the proper tools. Trust me, your team does NOT want to be the one who forces 1,000’s to wait and grumble or to cause our entire day to fall behind schedule.
Thanks every one and good luck at your next event!
