Our very own OregonFIRST interns at Autodesk have been busy this summer building a whole series videos to teach FIRST students how to effectively use Autodesk Inventor. Being FIRST students, they knew the difficulties many teams face when it comes to design. This series was developed to teach teams how to improve the efficiency, completion speed, and accuracy of their designs. The series is broken up into three chapters: Basic Understanding, Design Acceleration, and Presentation. Each chapter focuses on a different phase of the design process, so it is easy to become well-versed in the entire development. These videos should give you the knowledge you need to compete in the Autodesk Excellence in Design Award next year.

Welcome to Built by Design, a series of videos created to teach FIRST students how to effectively use Autodesk Inventor. Being FIRST students ourselves, we understand the difficulties many teams face when it comes to design. |

Chapter One: Basic Understanding Chapter One is focused on teaching the basics of good design. It contains everything from turning pencil sketches into digital diagrams that can be easily modified to generating robot chassis with custom frame elements at the click of a button. This chapter contains everything your team needs to take advantage of Autodesk Inventor’s digital prototyping and design optimization technology. |

Chapter Two: Design Acceleration
Chapter Two covers the functionality of the design accelerators under the “Design” tab in Autodesk Inventor. The goal of this chapter is simply to speed up the design process. This chapter is focused on modeling as efficiently as possible through implementing downloadable content, using bolted connections, and inserting chain and sprockets. |

Chapter Three: Presentation
While great design in itself is enough of a reason to take up advanced modeling practices, it is not the only reason to build detailed models. Autodesk software can also help with marketing applications. This chapter covers the basics of how to show off your model. Starting with applying material and texture patterns and appearances, we move all the way through basic animation in Inventor Studio and visual demonstrations in Autodesk Showcase. Your marketing team will love this chapter, as it demonstrates some great tools to use when recruiting and attaining sponsors. |

Supplemental Content:
This page family is the place for you to add tips, tricks, and other Inventor help as it applies to FIRST students. Post things here that you have found helpful that may also help other teams improve their design process. Good luck out there. |
